So, what exactly do we mean by shiraore? Shiraore actually belongs to the category of kukicha (“twig tea”), which is a green tea made with parts of the tea plant that is usually not used for making the most common type of green tea such as sencha or gyokuro. This gyokuro shiraore consists of a blend of tea stems, stalks and twigs which come from the production of gyokuro. This is the reason why it is considered to be the highest quality of kukicha. Similar to a gyokuro, with shiraore tea, one will experience umami which comes from the high theanine content. While in Kyushu (the most southern island), the people call this type of tea shiraore, Kyoto folks call it karigane.

Product Info

Name: Gyokuro Shiraore

Japanese name: 玉露白折

Ingredients: Green tea

Ingredients: 100% Yamecha green tea leaf stems

Region: Yabe Village, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture

Notes: Machine harvested

Vendor Info

Name: Kurihara Seicha Ltd.

Members: Kippei, Yuji, and Akio Kurihara (Father and sons)

Location: 4236 Kita Yabe, Yabe-mura, Yame-shi, Fukuoka Prefecture 834-1401, JAPAN

Size of fields: About 3 hectares

Altitude of fields: 300 - 700 meters

Multiple levels of roasting, multiple base tea leaves, and each delicious to the last drop.

Feel free to re-steep cup after cup after cup...

Roasted green tea, or Houjicha (or hojicha ほうじ茶 / 焙じ茶), has a smooth, slightly smoky flavor that is simultaneously light and sweet, hojicha has none of the bitterness of traditional green teas. The roasted nutty flavor is a favorite with Japanese, and commonly found in Japanese restaurants. Because it is caffeine-free, it is recommended to be drank at any time of the day. You can drink the tea, then use the steeped buckwheat as a topping on ice cream, an ingredient in your cookies, or add it when cooking rice! Alongside honing his tea production skills, during this time he learned firsthand about the risks of pesticides. After his time at the cooperative he returned to the family tea farm in 1992 and continued to learn tea production from his father and fellow tea farmers in Shimada, Shizuoka. Having learned about the risks of pesticides he started re-evaluating his family farm's approach to pesticide use and decided to shift the farm to using organic methods.

Switching to organic farming was not an easy task; insects and plant diseases caused challenges on the first field he took charge of. At first crop yield and leaf quality dropped, and he faced criticism from both family and other tea professionals. But he felt it was worth pursuing organic farming despite the challenges. Finally his hard work proved successful and the tea he produced became both delicious and pesticide free so the whole farm switched to organic farming.

Today, Masuda-san has over 25 years of experience in organic farming and is proud to produce tea that aligns with his values regarding tea production and tastes delicious!
